Officers from Rugby to be commended

Four police officers from Rugby are to receive Awards of Commendation from Deputy Chief Constable, Derek Cake at an Awards Ceremony to be held at Chesford Grange Hotel near Kenilworth today, Thursday 30 September 2004. Awards will also be made for Probationer of the Year, Special Constable of the Year, and Police Dog Action of the Year.

Also from Rugby, four officers will receive Long Service and Good Conduct Medals and one member of the Special Constabulary will receive a Long Service Medal.

Deputy Chief Constable Derek Cake said

"These people have all made a tremendous difference to make people safer in our community. Many, have acted selflessly, risking their own lives to save others and keep the public safe, and we will recognise their bravery.

"These Awards are made in recognition of their quick thinking, tenacity and courage. They have all achieved a level of performance and quality of service over and above the normal standards required."

During the afternoon, Sergeant Andrew Rawson, Constable Dean Carless, Constable Daniel Yates and Constable Dawn Evans will all be commended for their quick thinking and courageous actions in detaining a potentially dangerous and armed offender, so preventing any further danger to either the public or themselves.

On Monday 24 November 2003, these Officers attended a report of a man who had allegedly committed a burglary with a firearm in Brownsover at Rugby. They made a search of the area and found the offender driving a stolen vehicle. They followed him at a safe distance whilst waiting for an armed response vehicle to attend. Before the armed response vehicle arrived, the circumstances changed to the extent that they had to apprehend the offender to preserve the safety of the public. He was safely arrested without injury to anyone involved and the firearm was recovered.
