Police open their doors to potential recruits

Warwickshire Police is inviting prospective recruits to an Awareness Evening at its Headquarters in Leek Wootton, near Kenilworth at 6.30pm on Tuesday, 30 November. The purpose of the session, open to anyone interested in becoming a police officer, is to give an insight into the processes involved in joining the police and what it’s like to work as an officer.

Seamus Faulkner, Outreach Recruitment Officer explained

"During the two hour session, we’ll be answering recruitment related questions and will also be looking in detail at the application process and what an officer does on a typical day - if that exists!

"One of the most exciting aspects of the role is that it’s so varied. In a typical day you could find yourself being the support for an elderly victim of crime, arresting shoplifters, dealing with a serious car accident or even giving a talk at a school. No day is the same.

"We are very keen to hear from anyone interested in joining but particularly those from black and minority ethnic backgrounds and the gay and lesbian community as the force is currently under represented from these groups.

"We do believe we can serve the community better if our force reflects the cultural diversity of Warwickshire, and to encourage minority applicants to come forward we have invited speakers from the British Association of Women Police Officers, and the Black Police Association to come along and offer advice and support to candidates."

Seamus added

"Many minority individuals may not have considered a career with the police and this open evening gives them the opportunity to find out what it's really like and the support they will receive."

The evening will also include presentations on the probationary period, fitness, shift work and the Special Constabulary with plenty of opportunities for questions and answers.

Those people showing an interest on the day will be given an application form to formally apply for the recruiting window which starts on 1 January 2005 for one month.

Warwickshire Police is recruiting approxiamately 65 officers this year. As a police recruit, successful applicants will qualify for a highly attractive pay package and an excellent pension. The starting salary for the probationary period is £19,803 rising to £22,107 after completion of 32 weeks initial training. Applicants don't need any formal educational qualifications, although they will have to pass a range of tests and selection procedures.

If you are unable to attend on the day but are interested in joining the police, please contact Seamus or any member of the Recruiting Team for an application form. You will also be informed of other forthcoming events. The forms will not be sent out until recruiting starts in January. You can also apply online at www.policecouldyou.co.uk
