Bogus Trader at Leamington
Police would like to remind householders to always check the credentials of people calling at their home offering to do work, after a lady was duped into paying a workman before the work was carried out. The lady, a resident of Telford Avenue in Leamington handed over £120 to the bogus gardener after he agreed to lop trees at her home. The workman had previously engaged her official gardener in conversation, during which he gleaned information that her trees needed lopping. He also asked the lady's normal gardener for a business card, which was handed over to the bogus workman. Around 15:15 hours on Tuesday August 16, the bogus workman then went to the victim's house, presented the card and said he was a friend of her official gardener. The money was then handed over. PC Jamie Underhill , officer in charge of the case said: "People must continue to be suspicious of all unexpected callers to their homes. If you do not recognise the visitor, they do not have identification or they have not made a prior appointment close the door. If possible make a note of the registration number of any vehicle they may be using and pass on the information to police."
The bogus workman was described as approximately 30 - 35 years of age, about 6' tall, stocky build and with short dark hair. He was wearing a white, pink and purple shirt and black trousers and was possibly driving a yell or light orange small van.
Anyone who saw this man in the area on Tuesday afternoon, or has been approached by him, is asked to call PC Underhill at Leamington Police Station on 01926 451111.
